The people and principles behind the Dating Standards Calculator
Why We Built This Tool
The Dating Standards Calculator started from a simple, relatable question: “Are my dating expectations actually realistic?” People frequently debate whether their “type” is reasonable, but rarely have a neutral way to think about it.
We built a free, browser-based tool that turns a few preferences into an illustrative estimate of how selective they are. The goal is self-reflection, not judgment — to help you see how different criteria stack up, and where a single strict filter has the biggest effect on your pool.
Who We Are
We are a small, independent team of developers and writers interested in data literacy, relationships, and clear explanations. The project is run as an open editorial tool: we publish our assumptions, link our data sources, and update the methodology as better references become available.
We are not a dating agency, a matchmaking service, or a research institution. The calculator is an educational toy — a way to play with numbers, not a way to find a partner.
How the Estimate Works
The calculator starts from an approximate count of single adults of dating age in your selected geography, then multiplies a rough “remaining pool” factor for each filter you set — age, height, income, education, and location. The result is an illustrative percentage, not a guarantee or a prediction.
Every factor is documented. Inside the tool, the Data sources & numbers section explains the public datasets we reference (U.S. Census, CDC/NCHS, and published education-attainment figures) and where each number is a simplification. We deliberately avoid false precision: when a pool is tiny, we say so.
Because the math assumes filters are independent, real-world results will differ. Treat the output as a helpful thought-experiment, not a statistic you would cite.
Our Commitment to Privacy
The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The preferences you enter are used only for the real-time calculation on your device and are never stored, uploaded, or linked to your identity. We do not require an account.
Like most websites, we use privacy-friendly analytics to understand overall usage. When advertising is shown, it is served by third parties (such as Google AdSense) that may use cookies and similar technologies. Our full practices are in the Privacy Policy.
Editorial Honesty
We would rather under-promise than over-promise. The tool does exactly what the interface describes: adjust sliders and selectors, see an instant estimate, compare a condition-by-condition breakdown, and copy a plain-text summary to share. We do not claim features the product does not have.
